Some events find a place on a city's calendar. Others become part of its identity. For me, UPAINT Monaco has long been one of the latter.

Tomorrow marks the opening of UPAINT X: The Gold Edition, a milestone celebration of a festival that, over the past decade, has become one of Monaco's most distinctive cultural traditions. From 21 to 25 June, Larvotto's waterfront will once again be transformed into a vibrant open-air studio, where contemporary street art meets environmental action in a uniquely Monegasque way.

What began as a bold experiment has evolved into an internationally recognised event. Over the years, UPAINT has welcomed dozens of artists from around the world, produced more than 240 original artworks, and raised over €300,000in support of environmental and conservation projects. It is a rare example of a cultural initiative that has managed to combine artistic excellence with meaningful impact.

This year’s Gold Edition is particularly special. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, the festival is bringing back 17 iconic artists who have helped shape its story, including Chanoir, RYLSEE, Andrea Ravo Mattoni, Cacao Rocks, Mr. One Teas, and other leading figures from the international street art scene. Over five days, visitors will have the opportunity to watch artworks emerge in real time, witnessing the creative process from the very first brushstroke to the finished piece.

What has always distinguished UPAINT is that it is about far more than artistic talent, remarkable as that talent may be. At its heart lies a spirit of connection. The festival brings together artists, collectors, residents, visitors, and art enthusiasts through a shared belief that creativity can inspire, unite, and create positive change. There is something powerful about seeing art created in public—no barriers, no pretence, no distance between artist and audience.

As a long-time admirer of the festival, I remain captivated by the simple magic of watching a blank canvas transform into a work of art. In an age of digital distractions, there is something refreshingly authentic about experiencing creativity unfold before your eyes.

The culmination of this year's edition will be the charity auction on 25 June, where artworks created during the festival will be offered for sale. Proceeds will support environmental programmes through the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, contributing to initiatives focused on protecting oceans, forests, and biodiversity.

Most importantly, this anniversary offers an opportunity to recognise the people behind it all. The Colman family’svision, passion, and unwavering dedication have transformed an ambitious idea into a lasting institution. Launching a festival is an achievement; sustaining it for ten years while preserving its authenticity is something far more remarkable.

So, thank you to the Colman family—not only for creating an art festival, but for building a community, championing artists, supporting environmental causes, and reminding us that creativity can be a force for good.

Tomorrow is U Day.

And for anyone who believes in the transformative power of art, there is no better place to be.
